For the third year in a row, Abington Heights seventh grader Sue Roy, 12, South Abington Township has been named the middle school spelling bee champion. Most recently, she qualified for the second consecutive year to compete in the National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C., which will be held June 2 to 4. Last year, she finished 12th in the nation.
To qualify, Roy placed first in The Times Leader/Scripps Northeastern Pennsylvania Regional Spelling Bee held March 7 at the Woodlands Inn & Resort. Twenty-five area students who were the top spellers from grades fifth through eighth in their respective schools participated in the bee, correctly spelling words such as mahimahi, androcentric, sukiyaki and jitney.
