Abington Girls Softball team battles back

The Abington Area Girls Softball League 10 and under tournament team recently competed in the Dunmore Miss-E tournament this past weekend. The team compiled a 4 – 2 record.
In the first game, they defeated Dunmore Red, 20 – 7. Ilyssa Hamilton was the winning pitcher. Dominique Emmett, Kaylee DeMatteo and Rachel Gilmore each had three hits. Gilmore had four RBIs and Emmett tripled.
Abington lost their second game to Connell Park, 6 – 5. DeMatteo had two hits and two RBIs in the losing effort.
They won their next three games in a row, defeating Olyphant 13 – 12. Gilmore was the winning pitcher. Rachel Smertz had three hits and 2 RBIs. Emma Henzes, Grace Hambrose and DeMatteo had two hits apiece.
Abington beat Taylor 6 – 2. Paige Harris was the winning pitcher. Jessa Sablan, Caroline Mattise, Katie Carlin,- and Kristen Davis provided the offense. Henzes added a double.
The following day, Abington rallied to beat Lakeland, 13 – 12 in an extra inning game. Marissa Lewis singled in the tying run in the last inning and Angela DeMato worked a bases loaded walk to win the game. DeMatteo had three hits and 3 RBIs. Gilmore and Carlin had two RBIs each for the winners. Sablan added two hits.
The Abington girls were eliminated following a 9-3 loss to Tripp Park. Harris and DeMatteo pitched well in the loss. Sablan had two hits.
The team finished fourth out of 14 teams.
