A new highway safety corridor with doubled traffic fines was established on July 10 by officials from PennDOT, Pennsylvania State Police and Focus 81. The 12.6-mile stretch is along Interstate 81 in Luzerne County.
The designated corridor runs both northbound and southbound from mile markers 173.8 to 161.2, which is between Exit 175 (Pittston/Dupont) and Exit 159 (Nuangola). The area was selected because it is a high-crash, high-speed area.
In an effort to lower crashes and fatalities, State Police said they will be aggressively patrolling the corridor.
This is the second Highway Safety Corridor in District 4, which includes the counties of Lackawanna, Luzerne, Pike, Susquehanna, Wayne and Wyoming. The first corridor was established in 2004 to include the area, both northbound and southbound, from mile marker 183 near the River Street Exit 184 to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Airport and Avoca Exits 178A-178B.
