Five student athletes at Abington Heights High School, Clarks Summit, signed their National Letter of Intent to attend various colleges and universities on National Signing Day, Wednesday, Feb. 6. The National Letter of Intent program began in 1964 with the goal of reducing and limiting the recruiting pressure on student athletes and promoting and preserving the amateur nature of collegiate athletics.
Student athletes signing letters are assured of an athletics scholarship for one full academic year, provided they are admitted to the institution and are eligible for financial aid under National Collegiate Athletic Association rules. The signing also creates a recruitment prohibition that requires participating institutions to cease recruitment of a prospective student-athlete once they have signed with another institution.
