Robert A. Thorne, Clarks Summit and Central Florida died May 23 in Florida. His widow is the former Agnes Ritterbeck. They would have celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary on June 11.
Born in Duryea, he was the son of the late Stanley and Della Wickizer Thorne. He has been a resident of Clarks Summit for the past 48 years. Prior to retirement, he was the Borough Manager for Clarks Summit for 13 years and also was employed by Bendix Corp, Montrose, in the data processing center for 25 years. He was on the Clarks Summit council for many years. He won the distinguished service award for the PA State Association of Boroughs.
Thorne served 19 years on the Lackawanna Planning Commission and was on the Executive Board of the Lackawanna Republican Party. He was a member of the Clarks Summit United Methodist Church, where he served on Administrative Council, Finance Board and the Staff Parish Relations Board. He was a 50-year member of the Waverly Lodge F. and A.M, Keystone Consistory, Irem Temple, Tall Cedars of Lebanon and the Scranton Canoe Club. He was a past member of the Abington Rotary Club. He also was on the Board of Directors for Outdoor Resorts of Orlando.
Also surviving are two sons, Robert A. II and wife Maria, Tunkhannock and David A., and wife Kathy, Falls; a daughter Cheryl A. Faust, Coatsville; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister Ruby Heiser and a brother David W. Thorne
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 23 at 11a.m. in the Clarks Summit United Methodist Church with service by Rev. Donald Anderson, pastor. Family will receive friends at the church on Saturday from 10 a.m. until time of the service.
