The fourth-grade students of Waverly Elementary School are practicing their serving skills in preparation for the annual pasta dinner slated for on March 26. The community is invited to enjoy the offerings cooked up by restaurateurs Chris and Beth Barcia, parents of Waverly students.

“It’s a fun family event that brings the community together,” said Rachel Gilbert, Waverly PTA president. “The kids dress up to play the part of waiters. They are eager to serve the guests. They take pride in being able to take part in raising the money for their fourth grade field trip to the Davinci Science Center.”

Each year, as fourth-graders prepare to move on to the middle school, they hold this special fundraiser as a way to raise money for their final Waverly field trip and their elementary school yearbooks.

“I’m really looking forward to it, but I’m a bit nervous,” said Paige Walsh, 10, of Waverly. “I don’t want to mess up when I’m serving people. We’re all wearing white button-down shirts and matching black aprons. It makes me feel happy and proud that I can help.”

The Barcias, owners of Parmigiano’s in Clarks Summit and Palazzo 53 in Pittston, will donate their time and expertise to create menu items from scratch, using fresh ingredients.

The menu will include Caesar salad with homemade dressing, fresh grated parmesan cheese and croutons; penne pasta with plum tomato basil marinara sauce with garlic and olive oil; handmade, pan-fried meatballs; rolls; beverages and home-baked desserts.

“Guests get to pick their dessert from an array of homemade baked goods,” Gilbert said.

The dinner is offered between 5 and 7 p.m. at the Waverly Elementary School, 103 Waverly Road in Waverly. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for children and are available for either sit-down service, where diners will be served by members of the fourth grade, or for take-out.

Reservations for the Waverly Pasta Dinner are required and may be made by calling or emailing Kate Walsh at 570-575-9767 or emailing her With a reservation, payment can be made at the door. Cash or checks payable to the Waverly PTA will be accepted.
