KINGSTON – Scranton Prep greatly reduced the gap with Wyoming Area, but ultimately fell short against the Warriors, losing, 39-33, in the second round of consolations to finish tied for fifth Saturday in the District 2 Class AA Dual Meet Championships at the Kingston Armory.

The Cavaliers went 1-2 on the day and fell one win short of wrestling in the consolation final for third and fourth place.

Lackawanna Trail lost both its matches and finished tied for seventh.

Wyoming Area had roughed up Scranton Prep, 60-24, on Dec. 22 in a non-league match.

Scranton Prep improved as the season progressed and finished third in Division 2 of the Lackawanna League with a 5-2 record.

The Cavaliers lost to Lake-Lehman, 54-24, in Saturday morning’s quarterfinals, but came back to beat Hanover Area, 49-30, before falling to Wyoming Area.

Thor Balavage won two pins and a decision for Scranton Prep at 220. Mike Welsh also went 3-0 on the day with two forfeits and a pin.

Pat Connell (145), Tommy Carroll (152) and Ivan Balavage (182) had pins to lead the win over Hanover Area.

Chris Bender (182), Thor Balavage (220), A.J. Sluko (120) and Welsh (126) had first-period pins after Wyoming Area opened a 33-0 lead.

Lackawanna Trail lost to Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 champion Meyers, 65-6, in the quarterfinals then was eliminated with a 54-15 loss to Valley View.

Jordan Hannon had an eight-second pin at 285 for the only points against Meyers.

Trent Phillips (182) and Nathaniel Barbolish (195) had pins against Valley View and D.J. Klinges (152) added a decision.
