After almost 65 years of business in the Waverly Community House (Comm), the Attic Shop has closed.

The upscale consignment shop, which was recently re-named “The Vintage Pleat at the Attic Shop,” was a major fundraising effort for the Waverly Women’s Club, donating half of its proceeds to the Comm and the rest to various local charities, according to former coordinator, Carol Bauman, of Dalton. She said the club plans to fill in the gap with various individual fundraisers throughout the year.

“We’re sorry that it closed,” Bauman said. “We tried very hard to keep it open, but times changed.”

The best thing about coordinating the shop for the last six years for Bauman was the people.

“It was meeting all the interesting people,” she said. “Between other coordinators, or shoppers, or even the club members. It was just fun.”

Maria Wilson, executive director of the Comm, is sad to see the Attic Shop go, but is looking forward to the opening of a new store at the Comm, Upstairs Thrift will accept clothing on a donation basis with proceeds benefiting the Comm.

“The Attic Shop had 65 wonderful years,” Wilson said, “and they were a very vital part of the Women’s Club. People looked forward to seeing them open in September, and they surely will be missed.”

Upstairs Thrift will begin accepting donations on Sept. 22. Clean, gently-used items, including women’s, men’s, children’s and infants’ clothing, jewelry, toys, children’s books, household linens, small appliances, small furniture and lamps, may be left at the back door of the Comm, between the garage doors in the alcove. No electronics or books other than children’s books will be accepted.

The shop’s grand opening is scheduled for Oct. 4 and regular hours will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday and closed Sunday through Tuesday.
