The sky above Our Lady of Peace School filled with 34 blue and white balloons as students, clustered into groups to form the letters “O-L-P” on the side lawn, cheered.

The ceremony was a part of Fall Fun Day held Sept. 24, which also included a school-wide picnic and free time out back.

Attached to each balloon was a tag which read, “This biodegradable balloon was released by the proud students of Our Lady of Peace School, 410 N. Abington Road, Clarks Summit, PA, 18411, as we lift off a new school year. Please write to us to let us know how far our school spirit has flown.”

Darlene Milas, school secretary, said when the students released balloons with the same tags last year, they received about five responses in the mail, some from as far away as Harrisburg. The idea came from a faculty “brainstorming session” last year.

“We were trying to think of something to lift up the school spirit,” Milas said.

Once again, this goal was met.

“The kids have a blast,” she said, “and it definitely lifts their morale.”
