Lackawanna Trail Elementary Center principal Tania Stoker announced in her elementary report that the Lackawanna Trail PTO (Parent Teacher Organization) will be hosting a Valentine’s Day dance Friday, Feb. 14 from 6 p.m.- 8 p.m. at the elementary center. Stoker said the dance will have a DJ, pictures, a basket raffle, and refreshments.

“The dance is open to K-6 students only,” she said. “And students must be chaperoned by a parent or guardian.”

Another upcoming event happening on Friday is the Pennsylvania Music Educators Region Chorus. According to assistant high school principal Dr. Mark Murphy the occassion will take place at Tunkhannock Area High School at 7 p.m.

“We have three students represented there: Melissa Walker, Rachel Clark, and Seth Williams,” Murphy said.

Student council president Logan Garrison announced Tunkhannock High School will have a semi-formal on Feb. 22.

In other news, high school principal John Rushefski announced substitute teacher Dan Packer made a display for Black History month.

“I’ll use the words of Dan Packer,” Rushefski said. “He said, ‘We salute these great Americans on part of our recognition. The Lackawanna Trail Media Center has created our exhibit showcasing a number of works and important events relevant to black history. It is our hope that the works and actions being displayed inspire and motivate our students and faculty to help create a better future for all Americans.’”

Rushefski also stated that Packer is currently substituting for Kelly Hopkins while she is helping out at the elementary center.

In other business, special education director Stephanie Russell said Lackawanna Trail has been invited to visit the life skills classroom in Forest City.

“We have made some huge accomplishments and improvements to our life skills class,” Russell said. “But of course, we’re always looking for new ideas to expand our program.”

Russell also said that Forest City’s life skills program opened a store and purchased equipment and is doing their own engraving for trophies.

“We’re going to go visit the classroom probably at the end of this month,” she said.

In other business, the board:

Voted to appoint Dr. Michael Mould as the Lackawanna Trail School District representative to the NEIU 19(Northeastern Education Intermediate Unit) Board of Directors effective July 1, 2014 through June 30, 2017.

Voted to approve Jeremy Popiel as track coach at a stipend of $3,050 as per the collective bargaining agreement.
