Grant may save Waverly schoolhouse

WAVERLY TWP.- Community member Maryellen D’andrea attended the February 13 Waverly township meeting to follow up on the preservation of the township’s historic schoolhouse, at 1208 N. Abington Rd..

There is a possibility for a Keystone Historic Preservation grant approaching with a proposal deadline of March 1 through the Pennsylvania Historical Museum System.

The grant proposal would need to be submitted under Waverly Township since a committee specifically for the schoolhouse is not in effect yet; however D’Andrea plans to hire a grant writer herself and only needs the use of the township’s name. The next step is to identify projects and phases, D’Andrea said it looked to be a “Good process for us to go through to compile the info and see where we’re at and what we need to do.”

Before moving forward to fund raising events for the schoolhouse D’Andrea has asked Public works director Thomas James to check the schoolhouse for hazards. James agreed to assess it and see about any maintenance that needs to be done.
