SCRANTON – Michael Carr of Abington Heights and Tom Hendry of West Scranton joined three defending District 2 high school champions in producing titles late Saturday afternoon, Feb. 18, at the Lackawanna League Wrestling Tournament.
Carr defeated West Scranton’s Jon Kobrynich, 5-3, at 152 pounds in the only all-Lackawanna County bout of the finals.
Hendry, Scranton’s Mark Granahan, Lackawanna Trail’s Eric Laytos and Valley View’s Mike Galantini were the other champions from the county.
Delaware Valley ran away with the team title. Tournament officials stopped compiling the team score once the Warriors were well in front early in the day.
Hendry dominated Delaware Valley’s Frankie Carrozza for a 14-2, major decision at 120.
Granahan, a District 2 Class AAA champion last season, opened a quick, 5-0 lead on Honesdale’s Zach Smith before winning by injury default at 160.
Laytos, a 2010 state champion who won a District 2 title last season, needed just 47 seconds to defeat Delaware Valley’s Jack Fagan and remain unbeaten at 220 pounds.
Valley View’s Mike Galantini improved to 23-2 with a 3-1 decision in the final bout of the night.
Galantini handed Western Wayne’s Joseph Ingaglio just his second loss in 34 bouts this season in the 285-pound final.
Four other county wrestlers — Greg Pascale of Abington Heights (106), Shane Jennings of Scranton (113) and Marvess Rosiak (170) and Caleb Darling (182) of Lackawanna Trail — joined Kobrynich in finishing second.
Third-place finishers included Nick Senuk (126) and Matthew Carr (132) of Abington Heights, Jimmy McNally (138) of Scranton, Troy Uhrin (182) of Valley View and Ben Lehman (285) of Lackawanna Trail.
Valley View’s Nick Chesko (113) and Matt Judge (126), Scranton Prep’s Patrick Creedon (120) and Ryan Rudalavage (182), Abington Heights’ Josh Slocum (138) and Dylan Berardelli (285), and Scranton’s Shane McTiernan (152) and Myles Robbins (195) all finished fourth.
