CLARKS SUMMIT — The Summit University Theatre Department will present an alumni production of “Steel Magnolias” Oct. 9-11.
The play, written by Robert Harling, follows a group of Louisiana women through the joys and heartaches of life. The bonds of their friendship are tightened as together they experience the loss of one of their own. The story is based on the author’s own experience as he dealt with the death of his sister. As the title indicates, the lead female characters are as strong as steel while remaining as delicate as a magnolia blossom.
The production will feature a cast of local Summit University alumni, including Jillian Kemmerer, Laura Moore, Amber Severance, Rachel Strayer and Traci Thompson. Allyson Kochanek, a current Summit University Communications/Theatre major, rounds out the cast playing “Shelby.”
The play is directed by Dr. Brian Maxwell, a professor of English and communications who has been teaching and directing plays at Summit University for 30 years. He has studied in England and Scotland and received his Ph.D. from New York University in 2000.
Performance times are 7:30 p.m. Oct. 9 and 10 and 2 p.m. Oct. 11 in the Phelps Student Center on the campus. The performances will be held during Homecoming Week, which also features an Alumni Bible Conference, athletic events and block party.
Tickets are $8 for the general public and $3 for alumni. They can be purchased online at SummitU.edu/events or through the box office at 570-585-9000.
