Celebration of Spanish guitar masterpieces coming to Dietrich Theater Oct. 4

TUNKHANNOCK — The Dietrich Theater’s tradition of presenting free classical guitar concerts with master guitarist Jay Steveskey will continue this fall with the Spanish Guitar Masterpieces Concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 4.

This concert, sponsored by John P. Keker in memory of Jessie Reppy Keker, will be a musical journey through Spain, featuring some of classical guitar’s most beloved masterpieces. All are invited to relax and enjoy the sounds inspired by the Andalusian city of Granada’s Alhambra Palace to Madrid to the beautiful Spanish countryside.

The concert will be followed by a reception with light refreshments.

The program will feature the Spanish Romanticism of Francisco Tarrega (1852-1909), including his Recuerdos de la Alhambra and Capricho Arabe. and from the Golden Age of the guitar, Jay will include the Classicism of Fernando Sor (1778-1839), with Introduction and Variations on a Theme by Mozart, Op. 9.

Also included in the program: the Spanish Nationalism and Impressionism of Manuel de Falla (1876-1946) with Homenaje sur Le Tombeau de Debussy; music of Joaquin Turina (1882-1949), with Sonata Op. 61, and Homenaje a Tárrega, Op. 69; and the famous Asturias (Leyenda) by Isaac Albeniz (1860-1909).
