TUNKHANNOCK — April is here and all over the country special events are planned to celebrate young children in the Month of the Young Child. The Dietrich Theater has two special free events just for the preschool set and their families.

The Tom Knight Puppet Show will return to the Dietrich stage at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 14, sponsored by the Tunkhannock Junior Women’s Club and Toni Hockman. Meet the Orchestra with Abi and Timothy Zieger and their musical friends will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 16. Both events promise to engage young ones and get them on their feet and moving. Tickets are available at the ticket booth or can be reserved by calling 570-996-1500.

Since 1971 The Month of the Young Child has been celebrated across the United States. It was initiated by The National Association for the Education of the Young Child, when it recognized that it is in the early childhood years, birth through age eight, the foundation is built for children’s success in school and later life. The Dietrich Theater has been celebrating the Month of the Young Child for about 10 years, by bringing in The Tom Knight Puppet Show, the ever-popular show for preschoolers and the child in all.

Tom Knight brings his original songs and skits that act out stories with singing along, hand motions and even simple dance steps. Children and their caregivers will have a chance to meet Henry the Magician, Little Elephant, Allie the Alligator, and more characters, enacting stories about animals, food, recycling, and the importance of books and reading.

This year the Dietrich Theater has another special event for the Month of the Young Child – Meet the Orchestra sponsored by a friend of the Dietrich. Musicians Abi and Timothy Zieger and their musician friends invite families and their friends to learn about the sights and sounds of orchestral instruments and how they work together. There will even be an opportunity to try out some of the instruments.

The Tom Knight Puppet Show will return to the Dietrich Theater at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 14.
