SCOTT TWP. — Interstate 81 northbound in Lackawanna County reopened at 3 p.m. Saturday following an accident between a fuel tanker and minivan earlier that morning.

Traffic on Interstate 81 in Scott Township, near Exit 201, was detoured Saturday as a hazmat team cleaned up gallons of fuel from a Tafton Fuel tanker. The tractor trailer rolled over after hitting the rear of a 2015 Toyota minivan at 3:24 a.m., Saturday.

The Toyota driver, Laila Wilson, 40, and her passenger Wayne Wilson, 43, both of New Jersey, were traveling north on Interstate 81 in heavy fog, according to the Pennsylvania State Police report.

Wilson could not see, put on the vehicle’s flashers and slowed down in a single lane construction zone, the news release stated.

The fuel tanker driver, who was not identified in the police report, hit the back of the Toyota, causing the minivan to go up an embankment on the right shoulder of the highway and roll over, according to the state police report.

The tanker also traveled up the same embankment and rolled over which caused the trailer to break open and leak fuel.

Hazmat team was called in to clean up the fuel.

Wilson and her passenger sustained moderate injuries, and the tractor trailer driver had minor injuries, according to the police report.
