We have begun the bricks-and-mortar end of the journey: The ground is broken for The Gathering Place!

You can imagine the excitement and trepidation we experience as five years of planning come to fruition. We will work until our funds run out, all the while keeping our fundraising efforts strong until the entire project is complete. Several grants are still being pursued, and we have hopes that other foundations will heed the call.

We celebrate all those who have helped us along the way. Thank you!

The Abington Area Community Classroom recently held a bus trip to the Winterthur and Hagley museums. Blessed with a gorgeous spring day, we took advantage of the beautiful garden walks and Hagley Museum grounds as well as the tours of the DuPont mansions. Many thanks to Judy Griggs for planning the event.

The Strawberry Day 5K and Festival, to be held Saturday, June 18, is fast approaching. Sign up to run in this second annual event, designed to be a fun day for all ages in downtown Clarks Summit. This is a fundraising event for us, shared with the National Running Center. There will be games and activities for children such as a bounce tent and photo booth, both new this year. Pulled pork and chicken sandwiches are on the lunch menu and, of course, strawberry shortcake and lemonade. We’ll be on Spring Street beside the borough building from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Hope to see you there.

The Abington Area Community Classroom is currently planning the fall semester. Ideas range from a girls’ night out makeup class to an “understanding music” series. Of course, there will be another series of cooking classes — one will be French cuisine. Spinning and felting (wool) are possibilities, as is a class on dyeing. What workshops would you consider taking (or giving)? What topics would you like to learn about and discuss? This is your classroom and we want to know what your interests are and what you can contribute.

We had our most successful semester ever this spring. All of us working together create a wonderful classroom experience, and one in which we can all participate. Think about what you might offer to your community. Connect with us at our website wwwgatheringplacecs.org.

We will be working through the summer to offer you the best educational, fun experiences we can for the fall, so be a part of it and offer your ideas. Hopefully some, if not all, of our fall classes will take place at our new home at The Gathering Place on State Street, Clarks Summit. See you there!
