CLARKS SUMMIT — Instead of surfing the internet, children simulated surfing waves during a Get Moving! fitness program June 27 at the Abington Community Library.

Personal trainer Stephanie Hatfield led a group of approximately 20 kids, ranging from kindergarten to sixth grade, through a variety of exercises in an effort to promote an active lifestyle.

The program was part of the Pennsylvania Library Association’s 21st Century Literacies Initiative, PA Forward, which emphasizes basic literacy, information literacy, civic and social literacy, health literacy and financial literacy.

“It’s a way for the libraries to highlight the different literacies through our programming,”Abington Community Library Head of Youth Services Laura Gardoski said. “Everything we do funnels into one of those literacies. I knew we wanted to do a few fitness events because the theme of our summer reading program is, ‘On Your Mark, Get Set…Read.’ It was very creative and a good way to show parents ideas to help their children become more active.”
