SOUTH ABINGTON TWP. — The Griffin Pond Animal Shelter will hold its annual fundraising event, Paws in the Park, from 12 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 14 at McDade Park in Scranton. Admission is free, but donations are welcome and all proceeds will benefit the shelter.

People are not required to have a pet in order to attend.

The event serves to promote proper animal care, the importance of spaying or neutering pets and humane education to the community in a fun, family orientated way. Highlights include animals demonstrations, craft vendors, local merchants, face-painting, a photo booth, food trucks and more.

This year also features a Beach Party Pets Costume Pageant. Individuals or families, along with their furry friends, can get decked out in their finest, most outlandish beach-goer outfits and enter for a chance to win prizes. Registration will be open from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. and awards will be announced at 2 p.m. Entry fees are $5 for an individual and $10 for families (groups of two or more). Prizes will be awarded to the costumes for most original, best group and best pet/owner look-alike. Registration forms can be printed prior to the event online at GriffinPondAnimalShelter.com/Events.

Participants are asked to remember this is a family-friendly event and keep costumes appropriate for viewers of all ages.
