SOUTH ABINGTON TWP. — Local folk band Sassafrass will close out this year’s Lakeside Wednesday Concerts series with a show from 6 p.m. to dusk Aug. 31 at Hillside Park.
Admission is free, thanks to volunteer management and sponsorship from local media organizations and businesses.
Presented by the Abington Area Joint Recreation Board (AAJRB), the 11-week family-friendly series unfolded throughout the summer with a variety of musical styles and genres, from indie to jazz and classics through the decades.
Three part harmonies and eclectic instrumentation are the hallmarks of Sassafrass, an all-woman folk trio. Identical twins Channing Griggs (clarinet, banjo and vocals) and Jillian Hannigan, (bass, flute, pennywhistle and vocals) join guitarist and singer Jessica Illuzzi to play their flavor of mountain music, calypso, country, Celtic, gypsy, world music and originals.
Hillside Park, located on State Route 307 (Winola Road), adjacent to both Clarks Summit State Hospital and the Abington Senior Center, is handicapped-welcoming. Concert-goers should bring a picnic blanket or chair and are invited to stop by early to explore the walking trails and other park amenities. Attendees can bring a canned good donation for the Dalton Food Pantry and enjoy canoeing on the lake.
Although tailgating and picnicking is welcome, food will also be available for purchase from concert vendors.
