CLARKS SUMMIT — Abington Heights senior Trevor Sablan has a long family history of members who have served in the U.S. military.
When it was time to decide on an Eagle Scout project, the South Abington Township resident wanted to give back to his relatives and all those who sacrificed for their country.
“I figured something needed to be done here,” Sablan said. “This is a tribute to them.”
Sablan and about 25 volunteers from Boy Scout Troop 160 met at the Clarks Summit-Abington Area Veterans Park on a cold, rainy morning, Oct. 22, to clean up and beautify the area.
As part of the project, the Scouts planted bushes around the gazebo, placed mulch around several trees and cleaned up leaves in the park.
“I’m very thankful to have all these kids here to help me, because this is something I definitely could not have done on my own in a certain amount of time,” he said.
Sablan’s parents, Joe and Linda, are both retired master sergeants of the U.S. Air Force. Both his grandparents and one of his uncles have also served in the military.
“The troop is great, they always seem to come together when they need to,” Joe Sablan said.
According to Joe Sablan, the large turnout, even on a rainy day is indicative of the strong bond between members of the group.
“It’s actually not surprising; it’s just a (Troop) 160 thing,” he said.
Trevor Sablan, 17, expects to receive his Eagle Scout badge by the end of 2016.
