SCRANTON — Marywood University’s communications arts students will host “Freedom Week,” in celebration of first amendment freedoms from Monday, Nov. 28 through Friday, Dec. 2. All events are free and open to the public.

A Free Speech Wall will be displayed in the Learning Commons Lobby from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, Nov. 28. Participants are encouraged to exercise their freedom of speech by writing messages on the wall. An opportunity to learn about the history of and limits to freedom of speech will be provided.

There will be a “Freedom of Religion: State of Religious Freedom” panel presentation, in the Learning Commons, Room 331 at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29. Religious experts will discuss and debate the state of religious freedom in the United States. Participants can join the conversation and learn more about the foundations of this Constitutional freedom.

A talk about “Freedom of Assembly: A Visual History of the Right to Assemble” will take place in the Learning Commons Café at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30. Participants will learn about important exercises of the right to assemble through a photographic timeline from the time period 1960 through 2016.

Local community and campus journalists will discuss the major issues surrounding press freedom in 2016, at its “Freedom of the Press: State of Press Freedom” panel presentation at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 1 in the Comerford Theatre, in the Center for Natural and Health Sciences. Join in the conversation and learn more about the history of this democratic bedrock.

“Freedom Week” will wrap up with students presenting campus administrators with a petition for improved Wi-Fi on campus at noon Friday, Dec. 2. Students will host a short presentation at its “Freedom of Petition: Petition the Powerful” event.

An assembly photo exhibit, life-size petition, and the opportunity to win a “Freedom Week” T-shirt will be available throughout the week of Nov. 28.
