Harford Fair seeks scholarship applications

For Abington Journal

The Harford Agricultural Society is accepting applications for scholarships from students involved in the Harford Fair. Last year, the fair presented 14 $1,000 scholarships at its annual fair banquet, held at Dreyer Hall in Montrose. Because several of the recipients were away at college, parents or siblings accepted the scholarship award on their behalf. NEW MILFORD — High school seniors and college students who have been involved with the Harford Fair are invited to get a start on applying for a Harford Fair scholarship.

The directors of the Harford Agricultural Society are proud to continue their scholarship program for students who have been affiliated with the fair, either through 4-H, working, or exhibiting at the fair.

In addition to the one-page scholarship application, requirements include two letters of recommendation and an essay not to exceed two pages, double-spaced, which explains “ways in which I have participated in the Harford Fair and how winning the Harford Agricultural Society Scholarship Award will impact my education, my major and my career goals.”

Funds for the scholarships are raised through the auction of the first and second place prize-winning baked goods exhibited at the fair, private donations and special events at the fair.

This year’s baked goods will be auctioned at 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 21 in the Shade Pavilion. This is a recent change in order to accommodate more people to be able to participate.

College students interested in applying for one of the scholarships can find all of the information, including the application, which is due Aug. 31, 2017, online at HarfordFair.com. Applications can also be picked up at the Harford Fair office on the fairgrounds. Call first at 570-434-4300.

Scholarship winners selected from this year’s applications will be recognized at the Harford Fair Banquet in October.
