SCRANTON — The Northeast American Diocese of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church has acquired the property and facilities of the former St. Pius X Seminary and Fatima Renewal Center in Dalton.
The Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, also known as the Indian Orthodox Church, belongs to the communion of Oriental Orthodox Churches. Its members began emigrating to the United States in the 1950s.
“This beautiful space has served our local church well, and we are thankful that it will continue to serve a faith-filled purpose as a ministry of the Northeast American Diocese of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church,” Joseph C. Bambera, Bishop of Scranton, wrote in a news release.
The Northeast American Diocese, based in Muttontown, N.Y., will use the Dalton property as the site of its Holy Transfiguration Retreat Center. Proposed programs at the center include pre- and post-marital retreats, young adult retreats, summer camps for Sunday School children, youth summer conferences and the establishment of a monastic community.
