1967 — Six records were set in the District 12 track and field meet held at Lackawanna Trail High School.
“Four of the new marks were set by Abington Heights, scoring 127 points in contrast to Blue Ridge’s second with 42 1/2 and Lackawanna Trail 33, third,” read the Journal article.
“Abington Heights set four records, two of them by Bill West in the shot put and discus.
“Skip Brinkley won the long jump of 20 feet 3 inches, repeating his feat of winning the State B long jump last year. He also won the triple jump of 41 feet 1 inches.
“The Comet two-mile relay team of Connolly, Matthews, Staples and Trishman showed their heels to the Blue Ridge, Mountain View and Tunkhannock teams, by breaking the tape at 8 minutes and 38 seconds.”
1977 — A South Abington Elementary School first-grade class went on a field trip to Wayne Thomas’ farm in Factoryville, where the owner had been collecting and restoring an array of horse-drawn buggies and carriages.
The Journal ran a front page photo of the smiling children sticking their heads out the windows of one of the antique vehicles.
1987 — Three Boy Scouts from Troop 160 achieved the rank of Eagle Scout: John Urban, Robert Gercken and Emmet Sherman.
The troop, sponsored by the Abington Rotary Club, held an Eagle Recognition Dinner at the Clarks Summit United Methodist Church.
