S. ABINGTON TWP. — The Eighth Annual Forever Young Kids’ Fishing Derby will be presented in memory of the late “Bud” Young on Saturday, June 10 at Hillside Park.

The event is free and bait is provided. Each participant will also receive a free lunch, an event T-shirt and a prize raffle ticket. Pre-registration is available until the evening before at the Abington Community Library. Registration will also be open at 8 a.m. at the park the day of the event. Fishing will run from 9 a.m. to noon and the raffle drawing will be conducted and awards presented from noon to 1 p.m.

The derby is open to all children ages 0 to 15 in three age groups: 0-5, 6-9 and 10-15. Prizes and trophies are awarded for the largest fish in each age group, the “Bud” Award for the first fish caught measuring closest to 13 inches and the “Catch of the Day Award.”

Prizes to be awarded include bicycles, a television, gift cards and more.

Premier sponsor for the event is Eagle Cleaners. Grand sponsors include Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home; Abington Area Joint Recreation Board; Abington Heights Civic League, Inc.; Community Life Support; ExecuSource; LaMar Advertising; Peoples Security Bank and Trust and Sickler’s Bike Shop. Other sponsors are the Abington Lions Club, Abington Planning Group, F.O.P. N.E Lodge 63, J&B Printing, Kevin Treat Woodcarving, MetLife, the Rotary Club of the Abingtons and Waverly Masonic Lodge #301.

The Abington Community Library will also host a craft table during the event. Registration will be available for Abington Junior Football and Cheerleading. Lackawanna County Trout Unlimited will have a book for the kids and members will be available to help anyone needing assistance with fishing.
