CLARKS SUMMIT — A pair of high school athletes captured the Scranton Tennis Club Mixed Doubles championship July 31-Aug. 2. The second-seeded team of North Pocono’s Zac Lehman and Abington Heights’ Caroline Mattise topped the top-seeded pair of Cesar Leon and Kathleen McKenna, 5-7, 6-1, (10-3). Lehman’s serve and Mattise’s volleying proved to be the difference in the contest.

Both teams survived challenging semifinal matches with Lehman and Mattise edging Tim Aikman and Abington Heights’ graduate Cierra Beck 7-6 (6), 4-6, (12-10) while Leon and McKenna eliminated last year’s finalists, Bob Cullen and Marion Reese, 6-2, 4-6, (10-8).

John and Connie Weiss were the consolation champions with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Gary Reigal and Nidia Marchese. In the semifinals, the Weisses ousted the team of Josh and Kelly Arp, 6-4 and 6-3, while Reigal and Marchese upended Howard and Ann Conrad 1-6, 6-4, (10-7).

A total of 19 teams participated in the tournament, the largest turnout in recent years.

John Weiss and Burt Reese were co-directors of the tournament with Kathleen McKenna handling court preparation.
