BOYS BASKETBALL

Cavaliers rout Trojans

Nick Dende scored a game-high 16 points to help lead Scranton Prep over North Pocono, 83-24, in the quarterfinals of the District 2 Class 3A playoffs on Thursday, Feb. 18 in Carbondale. Wes Simons added 12 points, Logan Bailey scored 11 and Joe Rossi had 10 for the Cavs.

Comets knock off Knights

Abington Heights defeated Scranton, 46-19, in the quarterfinals of the District 2-4 Class 4A subregional playoffs on Wednesday, Feb. 17 in Scranton. Seth Maxwell scored a game-high 22 points to lead the Comets.

Cavs crush Wildcats

Logan Bailey scored a game-high 17 points to help lead Scranton Prep past Western Wayne, 93-31, in the first round of the District 2 Class 3A playoffs on Wednesday, Feb. 17 in Scranton. Nick Dende added 16 for the Cavaliers.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Classics upset Trojanettes

Scranton Prep downed Nanticoke, 40-36, in the semifinals of the District 2 Class 3A playoffs on Monday, Feb. 22 in Yatesville. Julia Sirotnak led the Classics with 13 points.

Lady Comets down Lady Trojans

Abington Heights defeated North Pocono, 41-39, in the quarterfinals on the District 2 Class 3A playoffs on Friday, Feb. 19 in Scranton. Nicole Getz led the Lady Comets with 17 points and Cassie Ksiazek scored 10.

Lady Lions edge Lady Sabers

Laurelann Penn scored a game-high 14 points to help Lackawanna Trail defeat Susquehanna, 49-48, in the semifinals of the District 2 Class A playoffs on Friday, Feb. 19 in Archbald.

Classics hold off Lady Invaders

Scranton Prep defeated West Scranton, 58-42, in the quarterfinals of the District 2 Class 3A playoffs on Friday, Feb. 19 in Carbondale. Jillian Paulus led the Classics with 24 points while Julia Sirotnak scored 17 and Calista Kline added 10.

Lady Comets top Lady Tigers

Cassie Ksiazek scored a game-high 13 points to lead Abington Heights over Tunkhannock, 56-22, in first round of the District 2 Class 3A playoffs on Wednesday, Feb. 17 in South Abington Township. Grace Hambrose and Nicole Getz each added 10 for the Lady Comets.

Classics down Hornets

Scranton Prep defeated Honesdale, 55-35, in the first round of the District 2 Class 3A playoffs on Wednesday, Feb. 17 in Scranton. Kathleen Rose led Prep with 14 points. Holly Daveski scored 13 points and Jillian Paulus added 11 for the Classics.

TRACK AND FIELD

Abington area athletes compete

Abington Heights’ Kyle Burke placed first in the boys 1,600 meter race during the Summit University High School Invitational on Friday, Feb. 19 in Clarks Summit. Jack Malone place fifth in the event for the Comets. Abington Heights’ Dan Uhranowsky finished fourth in the 3,000 meter run and 6th in the 800 meter run. Scranton Prep’s Kate Reilly placed first in the girls 1,600 run. Abington Heights’ Alex Scheuermann was third in the race and Prep’s Adiya Golden finished fourth. Abington Heights’ Claire Traweek was fifth in the 3,000 meter run. Faith Judson finished sixth in the 400 meter run for Abington Heights. Abington’s Allyson Derry was second and Lackawanna Trail’s Courtney Petrilak placed ninth in the 55 meter run. Abington Heights’ Katie Dammer placed second and Carly Danoski was third in the 800 meter run.

WRESTLING

Invaders top Cavaliers

West Scranton downed Scranton Prep, 57-21, in a Lackawanna League meet on Friday, Feb. 19 in Scranton. Sammy Segers (106 lbs.) won by forfeit for the Cavs. AJ Sluko (113), Ivan Balavage (182) and Thor Balavage (285) won by pin, and Bruce Parola (170) won by decision.

Cavs edge Trojans

Scranton Prep defeated Nanticoke, 36-33, in a non-league meet on Saturday, Feb. 13 in Scranton. Liam Moyle (138 lbs.), Tommy Carroll (160), Bruce Parola (182), Chris Bender (220) and Thor Balavage (285) won by forfeit for the Cavaliers. Ivan Balavage (195) won by pin for Prep.
