Abington area sports calendar for the week of March 2


    Coach Herman Little Basketball Clinics, begins March 15 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. for six weeks on Tuesdays for boys and girls 6 to 9 years old. Begins March 17 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. for six weeks on Thursdays for boys and girls in grades 4, 5, and 6. Cost: $60 per participant or $12 per class.     Abington Area Girls Softball League 2016 Registration, open now through March 15. The league is open to all girls ages 5-17 who are interested in playing recreational softball. Register: aagsl.org. Info: [email protected]

    Abington Little League Registration, open now through April 1. Cost: $85 per player. Register/info: www.abingtonlittleleague.com. The league hosts divisions for all ages. The league will host tryouts on March 5 and 12 for the Little League Division, and opening day is tentatively slated for April 9.

    Ninth annual D & H Distance and 5K Run, 9 a.m. Sept. 11 in Forest City. The fee will be $40 through Aug. 19. The race is a major fundraiser for the Rail-Trail Council of Northeastern Pennsylvania. Info/register: dhdistancerun.com, GetMeRegistered.com or www.nepa-rail-trails.org.

    Fly Fishing Video Tour and Expo, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. March 5 on the campus of Keystone College. The event will be hosted by the Keystone Creekwalkers Fly Fishing Club. An entire day of fly fishing videos and documentaries will be shown at Brooks Theatre and a fly fishing vendor area will be right next door in Brooks Hall. Over 25 vendors including tackle vendors, agencies like the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, DEP, DCNR and the County Conservation Districts will be in attendance. Special presentations will include renowned fly tiers, spey casting demonstrations, as well as an on the stream macro-invertibrate study and electro-fishing demonstration by Dr. Jerry Skinner. The study will be performed on the banks of the Tunkhannock Creek which runs through Keystone’s creek side campus. There will also be food, beverages, door prizes, and raffles.     AHEA Student Scholarship 5K Run/Walk, April 17, registration from 8-8:45 a.m. The run begins at 9 a.m., walk at 9:10. The race will start and finish at Abington Heights High School. All proceeds will benefit a graduating senior from the school district. Cost: $20 pre-registration, $25 same day registration. The first 125 runners receive a T-shirt. The top three male and female finishers revive a medal.     Heritage Explorer Golf Tournament, June 26 at Pine Hills Country Club in Taylor. Registration begins at 7 a.m. Tee-off at 8 a.m. Captain and crew format. Lunch will be served following an awards ceremony. In addition to 18 holes of golf, there will be live entertainment, contests and door prizes. Cost: $100, $50 for lunch only.
