Local BMX racers from Lackawanna and Luzerne counties qualified to compete for Pennsylvania state championship titles in Bethel Park on Sunday, Aug. 21 and the United States Regional Gold Cup championships in Maryland in October.

Gavin Bruno, of Carbondale, placed first in the 14-year-old expert division and Christian Black, of Mayfield placed first in the 11-year-old cruiser division and third in the 11-year-old expert division at the state championships.

Mike Butry, of Wilkes Barre, and RJ Vargo, of Exeter, also competed in state championship races after winning qualifying races held at Cedar BMX, beating out hundreds of racers from across Pennsylvania and other states.

Bruno, Butry and Black will also compete in the Gold Cup championships.
