Scranton Tennis Club hosts doubles tournaments

CLARKS SUMMIT — In the Blind Draw Mixed Doubles tournament held at the Scranton Tennis Club this past weekend, Justin Muthler and Patti Ostroski were crowned champions of the mixed doubles event, while Joe Bailey and Giju Oommen were the winners of the Mixed-Up division.

Muthler and Ostroski defeated Doug Klamp and Holly Packer in the final, after knocking out Robby Azzarelli and defending champion Marion Reese in the semifinal. Klamp and Packer eliminated Rahul Yadav and Kelly Lenahan in the other semifinal.

Klamp and Packer were the top-seeded team going into the semifinals, after winning 21 out of 24 games in the preliminary round. Muthler and Ostroski won 20 games in the round robin competition.

In the Mixed-Up division, which included eight men and two women, Bailey and Oommen were undefeated in their four matches. Finishing in a tie for second place were the teams of Lou Cuck and Connie Weiss and Tony Barrese and Kathleen McKenna.

John Weiss and Burt Reese were the tournament directors. A total of 44 players participated in the event.

The next tournament at the Scranton Tennis Club is the Lackawanna County Open on July 14-17. Events include Men’s and Women’s Singles and Doubles in A and B Divisions.
