Regional industry leaders are planning events to highlight the importance of manufacturing to the regional, statewide and national economy and turn the spotlight on the many rewarding high-skills jobs available in manufacturing fields. The planning groups announced the regional launch of National Manufacturing Day October 5.

The National Manufacturing Day collaborative effort is being led by NEPIRC – the Northeastern Pennsylvania Industrial Resource Center – and includes representative businesses and organizations from throughout the northeastern Pennsylvania and northern tier of Pennsylvania regions.

Planning Committee members include Weiler Corporation, Berwick Offray, Medico Industries, Action-Lift, General Dynamics OTS, GENTEX Corporation, Monadnock Nonwovens, Intermetro Industries, Bridon American, Pulverman, Diamond Manufacturing and others.

Representatives from the northern tier include Ward Manufacturing, HMAC, MetalKraft, Keystone North and Procter & Gamble. Tobyhanna Army Depot also participated in planning discussions.

NEPIRC and the Planning Committee will invite additional businesses and organizations that support the manufacturing industry to join the program, and all regional manufacturers will be invited to participate in a number of events scheduled during the week of Oct. 1. The week will culminate with a celebratory industry event Oct. 5 with details to be announced.

National Manufacturing Day is sponsored by the Fabricators & Manufacturers Association, International (FMA) and the U.S. Department of Commerce. NEPIRC is also a national sponsor. Although the day was designated to expand every community’s knowledge about manufacturing and improve the general public perception of manufacturing careers and manufacturing’s value to the national economy, the Committee has expanded that intent and approved week-long activities that include open houses, in-school presentations, various press events and regional speaking engagements by various industry experts.

“Manufacturing Day – and the special events leading up to it – will be the ideal way for NEPIRC and our regional manufacturers to demonstrate the true value of manufacturing to the vibrancy of our economy and to the critical role that manufacturing plays in our everyday lives and the future of our region,” said Eric Joseph Esoda, NEPIRC’s Executive Director. “October 5th – and indeed that entire week – is dedicated to celebrating the great work and innovation of the businesses that make northeastern and northern Pennsylvania one of the strongest and most productive centers of manufacturing in the state. The events we have scheduled for that week will raise awareness of manufacturing in a very, very positive way, and rightly so.”

“Manufacturing is a crucial part of the local, regional and national economy,” said Bruce Daniels of Medico Industries. “It drives value creation, innovation and employment and we want to use this time to show our communities the value and opportunities that manufacturing creates. Our future depends on our ability to strengthen and advance this vital sector, and Manufacturing Day can accelerate that process.”

Manufacturing Day is designed to expand knowledge about and improve general public perception of manufacturing careers and manufacturing's value to the U.S. economy. It is for students, parents, educators, media, customers, suppliers and the community at large. Visitors will learn about real career opportunities, training, and resources. In addition, manufacturers will learn about business improvement resources and services delivered through manufacturing extension partnerships.
