Abington Heights all-state girls soccer player Lilia Calvert made a verbal commitment to continue her academic and athletic careers on the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I level at Rutgers University.

Calvert made the announcement in late August as her junior season with the Comets was getting underway.

As a sophomore, Calvert led Abington Heights to the first three state tournament wins in program history and a spot in the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association state championship game where she scored in a 3-1 loss to Moon Area.

Calvert finished with school records of 65 goals and 151 points. She had 21 assists.

The United Soccer Coaches placed Calvert on their All-America list.

Both the Abington Heights and Scranton Prep girls teams won their season openers Aug. 29 in the only games either team played before Labor Day.

Abington Heights won at Lewisburg, 2-0. Scranton Prep defeated visiting Wyoming Seminary, 3-1.

The Scranton Prep boys got off to a 2-0 start in non-league games.

Abington Heights fell to Dallas, 4-0, in its non-league boys opener.
