Classics sweep cluster meet

Scranton Prep defeated Blue Ridge, 15-46, Montrose, 15-48, and Elk Lake, 27-30, in a Lackawanna League meet on Tuesday, Sept. 15 in New Milford. Erin Feeney finished first and set a course record with a time of 18:36. Adiya Golden finished eighth in 21:32, Mia Bellucci placed ninth in 21:48, Kate Reilly came in 11th in 21:49, Katie Walsh finished 13th in 22:23, Rachel Kerr placed 18th in 23:59, Evan Rine came in 19th in 24:07 and Christine Kaffka finished 20th in 24:32.

Cavs finish 1-2 in cluster meet

Scranton Prep downed Blue Ridge, 18-45, but fell to Montrose, 16-46, and Elk Lake, 27-28, in a Lackawanna League meet on Tuesday, Sept. 15 in New Milford. Pat Cosgrove finished sixth in 18:19, A.J. Sluko placed 13th in 18:52 and Tristen Shoemaker came in 16th place in 19:20.

Lady Comets wins two matches

Abington Heights topped Mountain View and Susquehanna, each by a score of 15-50, in a Lackawanna League meet on Tuesday, Sept. 15 in Clarks Summit. Katie Dammer finished first in 20:36, Alex Scheuermann placed second in 20:45, Claire Traweek was fourth in 21:28, Meghan Beahan finished fifth in 21:59, Carly Danoski placed sixth in 22:05, Emma Marion was eighth in 22:47, Maddie Show finished 12th in 23:18 and Annie Wesolowski placed 14th in 23:32. Lackawanna Trail’s Ashleigh Clark finished ninth overall in 22:53 but the Lady Lions team didn’t qualify.

Comets sweep cluster meet

Abington Heights defeated Lackawanna Trail, 18-45, Mountain View, 15-48, and Lakeland, 19-42, in a Lackawanna League meet on Tuesday, Sept. 15 in Clarks Summit. Dan Uhranowsky finished fifth in 18:17, Kyle Burke placed seventh in 18:46, Jack Malone was 10th in 19:07, Nathan Kizer finished 11th 19:22 and Chase Yarns placed 13th in 19:25. Matt Kinback finished in 10th place in 18:49 for Lackawanna Trail, which lost all three of its matches.

FIELD HOCKEY

Lady Comets top Lady Bulldogs

Abington Heights defeated Berwick, 6-1, in a Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 match on Tuesday, Sept. 15 in Berwick. Anna Baruffaldi and Danielle Beamish each scored two goals for the Lady Comets. Ashley Mercado and Jessie Show also had goals. Mamie Dempsey had two assists and Show had one.

Lady Lions top Lady Comets

Lackawanna Trail downed Abington Heights, 2-0, in a Wyoming Valley Conference match on Friday, Sept. 18 in Factoryville. Courtney Dwyer scored both goals for Trail. Madison Lee and Jordan Laytos each had an assist. Sarah Weisenfluh made one save for Trail and Olivia Mendo stopped eight shots for the Lady Comets.

Lady Comets edge Lady Hawkeyes

Abington Heights defeated Hanover Area, 2-1, in a Wyoming Valley Conference match on Monday, Sept. 21 in Hanover Township. Olivia Kerrigan and Ashley Mercado scored goals for the Lady Comets. Anna Baruffaldi provided an assist and Olivia Mendo made 10 saves.

FOOTBALL

Comets suffer first loss

Williamsport defeated Abington Heights, 36-14, in a non-league game on Friday, Sept. 18 in Williamsport. Brandon Ostrowski caught a 34-yard touchdown pass from Jordan Hollander and Rheyse Green returned a kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown to account for the Comets scoring plays.

Cavs pound Tigers

Scranton Prep routed Tunkhannock, 62-7, in a non-league game on Saturday, Sept. 19 in Scranton. Tyler Stafursky and Ricky Morgan each rushed for two touchdowns, and Mario Giannone returned two punts for touchdowns. Braden Burrier rushed for a touchdown and Will Mulligan caught a touchdown pass from Jake Ryan.

GOLF

Classics golfers qualify

Four Scranton Prep golfers qualified for the District 2 tournament, to be played Oct. 12 at Elmhurst Country Club, during a qualifying event on Tuesday, Sept. 15 at the Scranton Municipal Golf Course in Lake Ariel. Reilly Ruane shot an 83, Alex Fitzsimmons carded an 87, Lauren Golden finished with a score of 89 and Emily Goryeb shot a 98. Golfers had to shoot under 100 to qualify.

Lions hold off Eagles

Lackawanna Trail defeated Mountain View, 5-4, in a Lackawanna League match on Wednesday, Sept. 16 in Tunkhannock. Cody Stuenzi, Andy Faist and Matt Kwiatkowski had individual wins for the Lions. The teams of John Maier-Stuenzi and Evan Kongvold-Kwiatkowski won better-ball matches.

Comets knock off Cougars

Abington Heights downed Valley View, 5-4, in a Lackawanna League match on Thursday, Sept. 17 in Lake Ariel. Troy Kelleher, Andrew Jalowiec and Matt Mecca had individual wins, and Sam MacGregor played to a split. The team of Kelleher-Jalowiec picked up a better-ball win and MacGregor-Luke Fayocavitz picked up a split.

Scranton Prep shut out Scranton, 9-0, in a Lackawanna League match on Thursday, Sept. 17 in Lake Ariel. Marco Nieto, Tom Keegan, Tyler Marchese, Sebastian Cimoch, Jack Habeeb and Frank Adamo won individual matches. The teams of Nieto-Keegan, Marchese-Cimoch and Habeeb-Adamo won in better-ball play.

Lions split with Blue Devils

Lackawanna Trail tied Old Forge, 4 1/2 – 4 1/2, in a Lackawanna League match on Thursday, Sept. 17 in Clarks Summit. Evan Kongvold, Matt Kwiatkowski and Andy Faist had individual wins for Trail. The team of Kongvold-Kwiatkowski picked up a better-ball win and Faist-Owen Hyde played to a split.

Lions fall to Bucks

Dunmore defeated Lackawanna Trail, 7 1/2 – 1 1/2, in a Lackawanna League match on Monday, Sept. 21 in Lake Ariel. Owen Hyde picked up an individual win and the team of Andy Faist-Hyde played to a split in better-ball competition.

Cavs sweep Warriors

Scranton Prep downed Delaware Valley, 9-0, in a Lackawanna League match on Monday, Sept. 21 in Lords Valley. Marco Nieto, Frank Adamo, Tom Keegan, Jack Habeeb, Sebastian Cimoch and Tyler Marchese had individual wins. The teams of Nieto-Adamo, Keegan-Habeeb and Cimoch-Marchese won in better-ball play.

Comets rout Knights

Abington Heights defeated Scranton, 9-0, in a Lackawanna League match on Monday, Sept. 22 in Lake Ariel. Luke Fayocavitz, Dan Munley, Colin Florey, Pat McGrail, Eric Mahoney and Connor Kelleher won individual matches. The teams of Fayocavitz-Munley, Florey-McGrail and Mahoney-Kelleher won in better-ball play.

Comets edge Knights

Abington Heights downed Scranton, 1-0, in a Lackawanna League Division 1 match on Tuesday, Sept. 15 in Scranton. Noah Sirianni scored the only goal of the game off an assist from Evan Florey. Comets goalkeeper Jackson Danzig made 10 saves.

Cavs shut out Cougars

Scranton Prep defeated Valley View, 2-0, in a Lackawanna League Division 1 match on Tuesday, Sept. 15 in Scranton. Justin Hammert and Cullen Myers scored the goals for Prep. Myers and Corbin White provided assists. Goalkeeper Blake Hammert made five saves for the Cavaliers.

Scranton Prep downed Abington Heights, 4-1, in a Lackawanna League match on Thursday, Sept. 17 in Clarks Summit. Cullen Myers led Prep with two goals and two assists. Corbin White and Justin Hammert scored the other goals for the Cavaliers. Brad Sopinski scored off an assist from Colin Klingman for Abington Heights. Blake Hammert made 11 saves for Prep while Jackson Danzig stopped five shots for the Comets.

Lady Comets hold off Classics

Abington Heights defeated Scranton Prep, 2-1, in a Lackawanna League match on Thursday, Sept. 17 in Scranton. Tiana Yarns and Allyson Derry scored the goals for Abington. Lydia Lovecchio had Prep’s tally off an assist from Cara Griffith. Ashley Mulherin had an assist for the Lady Comets. Johanna Show made nine saves for Abington, Megan Purcell stopped six shots for Prep and A.J. Hendershot made three saves for the Classics.

Classics top Lady Buckhorns

Scranton Prep defeated Wallenpaupack, 3-2, in a Lackawanna League match on Monday, Sept. 21 in Hawley. Cara Griffith scored two goals and Angelina Falcone added another for Prep. Liz Shoemaker, Mary Kate Caucci and Amanda Bolland had the assists. Megan Purcell made five saves and A.J. Hendershot stopped two shots for the Classics.

Lady Comets knock off Lady Wildcats

Abington Heights downed Western Wayne, 3-1, in a Lackawanna League match on Monday, Sept. 21 in Lake Ariel. Kelly Seechock scored two goals and Ally Christman added another for the Lady Comets. Emma Henzes provided an assist. Johanna Show made two saves for Abington Heights.

Elk Lake downed Lackawanna Trail, 3-1, in a Lackawanna League match on Wednesday, Sept. 16 in Dimock. Allison Melnikoff led Trail with 22 digs and Caroline Mack contributed 10 assists.
