At a recent meeting of the Rotary Club of the Abingtons, we pledged to continue to support the Boys Scouts of America, Troop 160, Clarks Summit. Scoutmaster John D’Elia and Troop Committee Chairman Mark Davis presented their charter to our Rotary treasurer Leah Rudolph. She signed the charter on our behalf and will act as liaison from the Rotary Club to the Scouts, continuing a job we have willingly accepted for more than 50 years. The Rotary and the Boy Scouts have a common goal — to do good.

At the Rotary meeting, our president Bruce Valentine asked for anyone who either was a Boy Scout or had participated in Boy Scout leadership activities to stand and come to the podium. Almost everyone in the room got up and moved to the small dais. What a surprise! Rotarians had started doing good when they were Boy Scouts.

Our Rotary alliance with the Scouts takes many forms. You can see Scouts working alongside of Rotarians at all of our events. They help with set up and clean up at the Fourth of July fireworks display. At our pasta dinner, they sell tickets and assist with setting up tables and chairs.

The annual Boy Scout Breakfast is from 7 to 11:30 a.m, Saturday, Nov. 5, at the Clarks Summit United Methodist Church. If you go, for the price of $10 you will receive as much as you want of a ham and French toast breakfast. You will also meet neighbors and friends because so many people turn out to support the Scouts.

Far more important that the food you will eat and the people you will greet will happen as you see our local Boy Scouts in action. They look good, clean and smart. They set places, guide guests to seats, serve breakfasts, clean up spills and work efficiently together. They are smiling and polite to everyone. In this world where we are bombarded with so many bad things, and we hear of issues of disrespect and dispute from young people, what a delight it is to watch the youth of our community, hard working and pleasant, working for a common goal.
